New Asylum Seekers Work Programme in Sweden

The Swedish municipality of Södertälje has taken drastic action in order to combat high numbers of unemployment amongst local refugees.

Instead of relying on the Employment Services Bureau to help immigrants find work locally, Södertälje has launched a special project for refugees to find employment all over Sweden.

However, local politicians consider this action a last resort and Municipal Commissioner Anders Lago sees this as a sign of the employment services’ failure to do their job.

Södertälje, south of Stockholm, takes on around 100 refugees every month, despite a dearth of accommodation and jobs.
