Swedish Migration Court Puts Halt to Greek Extradition

In a turnaround decision, the Migration Court in Malmö has decided to halt the extradition of a 27-year-old Iraqi man to Greece.

The court believes that Greek authorities will not give the handicapped asylum seeker a just appraisal. Before seeking asylum in Sweden last November, the man fled to Greece for a week but then returned to Iraq for a brief period.

Sweden’s Migration Board considers the Migration Court’s action to be in direct breach of the EU’s Dublin Agreement. This ruling states that a refugee may be extradited to the initial country of immigration.

The Migration Board’s Director General Dan Eliasson says he is determined to appeal the court’s decision.
