New York based company Decadancetheatre bring their unique hip-hop ballet Firebird to the Playhouse, a stunning fusion of urban dance moves with classical ballet based on Igor Stravinsky's ballet of 1910. Presented as part of LEAP 08, Merseyside Dance Initiative's annual dance festival, Firebird runs from Thursday 13 to Friday 14 March at the Playhouse.

Meet Iva, a young girl in the inner city whose youthful exuberance keeps her blissfully ignorant of the potential dangers around her. One day, in the midst of exploring her surroundings, she meets an unlikely companion who will prove to be an even more unlikely savior - a dazzling creature known only as the Firebird through which Iva can see all things that are possible. As Iva encounters a series of challenges she will need the Firebird's light to find her way out.

Mashing up Stravinsky's score with original hip-hop beats, fusing breakdance with ballet and remixing the classic story into a contemporary text, the all-female cast challenge the ballet convention of a 'handsome prince' and transplant the Russian legend to the streets, basketball courts and dance floors of modern day America. A high energy dance performance ready to entertain diverse audiences of all ages, Firebird presents a new vision for hip-hop dance theatre.

Decadancetheatre is made up of female dancers from the US, Germany, Italy and Japan who use hip-hop as their shared form of communication, breaking down language barriers with an urban folk culture acquired in the clubs and on the streets of their different cities. The company sets out to change the position of women in the male-dominated hip-hop culture, taking the female dancers out of the background of music videos and into the forefront of theatrical performance. -- www.everymanplayhouse.com
