Swedish Foreign Minister Supports Serbia’s EU Candidacy

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has declared his opinion that Serbia should acquire official EU candidate country status as soon as possible.

In an article co-written with the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, and published in The Times, Le Figaro, La Republica, El Pais and Blic, Bildt insists that Serbia’s citizens be able to travel freely within Europe and that the EU’s visa facilitation agreement of January is not enough.

Five years after the assassination of former Serbian Prime Minister and EU supporter Zoran Djindjic, Bildt and Kouchner feel that Serbia’s future lies firmly in Europe.

Both Sweden and France recently recognised the independence of the Serbian breakaway province of Kosovo which provoked Serbian protest.
