Clinton backer quits campaign over Obama race remark

Posted March 13th, 2008 by admin_huliq

Democratic icon Geraldine Ferraro has resigned from Hillary Clinton's campaign finance committee after a race row sparked by her comments about White House hopeful Barack Obama.

Campaign sources confirmed Geraldine Ferraro stepped down on Wednesday amid controversy ignited by her remarks two days ago that Obama was only in such a high-profile political position because he was African-American.

Obama had earlier called Geraldine Ferraro's assertions "ridiculous" and "wrongheaded" after his campaign on Tuesday had called for Ferraro to be fired from the Clinton effort.

Ferraro who blazed a historic path in becoming the Democratic party's vice presidential nominee in 1984, said in an interview with a newspaper "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position."

"And if he was a woman of any color he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept," Geraldine Ferraro said.

Ferraro later defended her comments in a series of television interviews.

It Ain't Necessarily So....

Just for the record: this comment is being written by a retired, white woman.

There is a 'truism' in life, that 'timing is everything'.

Ms. Ferraro's remarks on Feb. 28th, reported on March 7th, came after the Ohio & Texas primaries AND just before the deep south state of Mississippi. And 6 long weeks until the Pennsylvannia primary where their Governor Ed Rendell has stated there are areas in his state that 'will not vote for a Black man'.

Reported in the Torrance Daily Breeze, "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," she said. "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

Richard Wolffe, in Newsweek, reported that back in l988, Ms. Ferraro was QUOTED as saying that, ""If Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn't be in the race."

What also is interesting that it was reported in the LA Times this morning that Senator Clinton's campaign has released a memo about Voting Demographics as proof that she is the more 'electible' candidate.

I will leave it to the readers of this comment to answer the question about 'timing being everything' and what is believable.
