Microsoft To Xbox-360 Users: No Blu-Ray For You

It looks like all that talk about a Blu-Ray drive coming to the Microsoft Xbox-360 is just hot air. Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360 video games was quoted in a Reuters article as saying the following.

Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience,”

As to why they decided to go this route, he didn’t say but he did give this hint:

“We’re the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content,”

Translation: If you want HD movies on your Xb0x-360, you’ll be downloading them rather than renting them from Blockbuster.

In my humble opinion, put one more point in the Playstation 3 column as I can use that for ALL my media needs. While I understand the potential of renting or selling movies online (like Apple does), I don’t think the time is right for that. Until it is, people will still want to rent movies on a physical medium. Which makes the Xbox-360 less desirable for that need.
