FDA arrests heparin supplies and orders testing

The Food and Drug Administration issued Friday and order to arrest all heparin products manufactured for import.

The raised concerns about serious side-effects of heparin and the latest findings – the discovery of contaminant in some of drug's active ingredient – made the authorities not only detain the supplies, but urge manufactures to conduct a number of tests for possible contamination. If not the FDA is going to test heparin supplies itself.

In March 2008 major recalls of Heparin were announced by pharmaceuticals due to a suspected and unknown contamination of the raw Heparin stock imported from China. The FDA was quoted as stating that at least 19 deaths were believed linked to a raw Heparin ingredient imported from the People's Republic of China, and that they had also received 785 reports of serious injuries associated with the drug’s use.
