Marvin Hamlisch To Perform At New Jersey Theatre

The State Theatre announces the "The Ultimate Gift" song auction. Oscar and Tony Award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch will create and/or dedicate an original score and lyrics for the highest bidder or one person of their choice in support of the 2008 Benefit Gala.

The song's debut will be at the State Theatre Benefit Gala Concert, "From Broadway to Brunswick" held on Saturday, May 3. Bidding starts at $20,000 and closes on Monday, April 14 at 5pm.

In addition to a song created and performed by Marvin Hamlisch, the winner will also receive the autographed original score, as well as an onstage dedication at the State Theatre Benefit Gala 2008 concert to the person for whom the song is written.

State Theatre President & CEO Wes Brustad adds, "We are thrilled that Mr. Hamlisch offered to write a song to help the State Theatre's fund raising efforts. To have a song written by one of the greatest composers in the entertainment business is a once in a lifetime opportunity for some fortunate person. He or she will treasure that forever because that's something you can't buy off the rack!"

The song will be performed as part of an original Broadway revue produced by Hamlisch for the State Theatre Benefit Gala, "From Broadway to Brunswick." The Gala performance will feature songs from current Broadway shows and revivals, performed by a full band with singers. "From Broadway to Brunswick" is only the concert portion of the benefit gala, which will be held on Saturday, May 3 at 5pm, and will also include cocktails, dinner, and dancing.

Marvin Hamlisch is the composer of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, A Chorus Line. He has also written the scores for many movies, including Sophie's Choice, The Spy Who Loved Me, and The Way We Were, for which he won an Oscar, a Grammy and a Golden Globe.

Hamlisch is offering this gift in recognition of the service the State Theatre provides for New Jersey audiences. He supports the mission of the State Theatre as non-profit organization, to provide access to the performing arts and entertainment for people of all ages. -- www.statetheatrenj.org
