With worldwide TV audiences of 150 million, Eurovision is everyone's secret guilty pleasure. Eurobeat offers audiences the chance at last to leap out of the closet and gives the UK a genuine opportunity to win Europe's greatest cultural collaboration once more! And even the face of Eurovision, Terry Wogan, will be there to whip the crowd into a frenzy (well, he'll be on screen, actually – does that count?).
Audience members are each allocated to one of the ten competing countries as they enter the theatre and, as with Eurovision, the audience votes for their favourite contestants via text message (although with this show, the voting is genuine). Eurobeat has been hailed as the first interactive musical, and because every performance can have a different winner both the audience and performers are kept in suspense. Do the cast get competitive? Of course they do! And remember, as with Eurovision you cannot vote for your own country but there is nothing to stop you from bribing others to!
Former Olympic pole-vaulting champion, lifestyle program hostess and cabaret performer Boyka (Sally Lindsay) and children's TV presenter Sergei (Les Dennis) host the competition held in sunny, safe, secure Sarajevo. One after another the contestants do all that they can to win the love and the votes of the audience (some of them will stop at nothing) and, whilst the votes are being tallied, marvel at the half-time entertainment spectacular as Boyka captivates the audience with her moving rendition of "I'm Sarajevo…Taste Me!"
Whether you're in love with Lulu and Lordi, are bonkers for Bucks Fizz and Brotherhood of Man or simply delirious for Dana International, (or just don't get how Serbia won in 2007), Eurobeat can't fail to win your vote. Tickets for Eurobeat (11 – 16 August) are on sale from The Mayflower Box Office. -- www.the-mayflower.com
