New Jersey Theatre Presents Dance-Illusionists MOMIX

State Theatre presents MOMIX in a "best of MOMIX" program on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 8pm. MOMIX is sponsored by Sherard and Naomi Murphy. Tickets range from $25-55.

The "Best of MOMIX" program includes:DISCMAN, ORBIT, TUU, LUNAR BALLS, GILA DANCE, WHITE WIDOW, THE LAST VAUDEVILLIAN, MILLENIUM SKIVA, BAY OF SEETHING, THE WIND UP, SPUTNIK ("Fellow Traveler"), and E.C.

Known internationally for presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty, MOMIX is a company of dancer-illusionists under the direction of Moses Pendleton. For 20 years, MOMIX has been celebrated for its ability to conjure up a world of surrealistic images using props, light, shadow, humor, and the human body.

In addition to stage performances worldwide, the company has frequently worked on special projects and in film and television. MOMIX has made five Italian RAI television features broadcast to 55 countries (including the USSR and China) and has performed on Antenne II in France. MOMIX was also featured in PBS's "Dance in America" series. The company participated in the "Homage a Picasso" in Paris and was selected to represent the U.S. at the European Cultural Center at Delphi.

The company is featured on a Decca Records laser disc, appearing with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony in the Rhombus Media film of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, winner of an International Emmy for Best Performing Arts Special. In 1992, Pendleton created Bat Habits, developed with the support of the Scottsdale Cultural Council/Scottsdale Center For the Arts, Scottsdale Arizona and the University of Washington to celebrate the opening of the San Francisco Giants' new spring training park in Scottsdale, Arizona. This work was the forerunner of Baseball, which was created by Pendleton in 1994. MOMIX is featured in one of the first IMAX films in 3-D, IMAGINE. The company is based in Washington, Connecticut.

Moses Pendleton, Artistic Director / Choreographer

Moses Pendleton was born and raised on a dairy farm in northern Vermont. He received his early performing experience exhibiting Holstein Friesians at the Caledonia County Fair. He received his B.A. in English Literature from Dartmouth College in 1971 and co-founded Pilobolus Dance Theatre in the same year. In the 1970's, Pilobolus won worldwide acclaim for its innovative blend of acrobatics and imagination, including the Berlin Critics Prize in 1975. Pendleton began to work outside Pilobolus in 1980 when he choreographed the closing ceremonies for the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid. In addition to his work with MOMIX, Pendleton has been active as choreographer and performer for numerous other companies.

His film work includes Moses Pendleton Presents Moses Pendleton for ABC Arts in 1982, winner of a Cine Golden Eagle award; Julian Lennon's Too Late for Goodbyes in 1984; and the 1991 film FXII. Also active in music videos, his work appears in Prince's "Batdance" music video for the movie Batman, and videos for the bands White Lion, Shadowfax, and pop singer Cathy Dennis. Through Pilobolus, his work has been seen in PBS' "Dance in America" and "Great Performances" series. His 3D IMAX film Imagine was released at IMAX theaters worldwide in September 1994. Pendleton's other recent projects include the workshop production of Disney Theatrical's Hunchback of Notre Dame; a commission for The Arizona Ballet rooted in Native American folklore; In Movimento, a live production for Procter & Gamble with the Romanian National Gymnastic Team and FIAT's 100th Birthday Celebration in Torino, Italy.
