Sherlock Holmes Afoot At Actors Theatre

World-renowned master sleuth Sherlock Holmes comes to Actors Theatre of Louisville January 30 - February 24 in Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure by Steven Dietz. Based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Arthur Conan Doyle, this treasured classic brings Holmes' pulse-quickening adventures to life in a mystery of intrigue, passion and suspense.

Press Opening is slated for February 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Under the direction of Edward Stern, Artistic Director of Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure is the fifth production of the 2006-07 Brown-Forman Mainstage Series presented in the 637-seat Pamela Brown Auditorium.

Holmes final escapade kicks off when some small-time criminals quickly become entangled with some big-time crooks and an intricate network of London crime. A kidnapped damsel, scandalous letters and London's seamy underworld find Holmes pitted against his two most perilous foes: certain death and impassioned love. As the plot twists and turns, Holmes must prevail against the mastermind of evil Professor Moriarty and keep his wits opposite Irene Adler, the beautiful, mysterious opera diva who has captured his heart. Holmes uses his deductive genius only to discover that he may be the next victim.

Dietz, a prolific American playwright, has been represented previously on the Actors Theatre stage during the Humana Festival of New American Plays with productions including God's Country (1989), Private Eyes (1997) and The Spot (2004). He is the author of over 25 plays and adaptations performed at more than 100 regional theatres across the country as well as off-Broadway.

In commenting on what it's like to adapt such a classic and familiar piece of literature to the stage, Dietz said, "This world is so rich, so varied, so wonderfully complex and contradictory, that it makes for a very thrilling dramatic palette to work from. It's my avid hope that I have done justice to Mr. Conan Doyle and his legion of admirers."
