Pilgrims in Jerusalem March Through Via Dolorosa

Thousands of pilgrims in Jerusalem have taken part in the traditional procession on the Via Dolorosa, which according to the scriptures is the road taken by Jesus Christ when he carried his cross to the site of his crucifixion. Many of the pilgrims carried a wooden cross.

The pilgrims gathered by the Lion's Gate in the east of the Old City and marched to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre where Jesus is believed to have been crucified and buried.

In the north of the Philippines 20 people have been nailed to the cross to mark Good Friday. They were nailed to the cross for a short amount of time to do penance for their sins. The Good Friday crucifixions in the Philippines have grown into a tourist attraction in recent years.

The Catholic Church has distanced itself from the practice. The Filipino health authority stressed the importance of hygiene for the participants. They advised sterilising the nails to prevent infection and recommended they receive tetanus injections.
