UMBC U Must Be Champions

The Retrievers will take on the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday, March 21, in Raleigh, North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The game will be broadcast on CBS and will begin 30 minutes after the Gonzaga-Davidson contest, which starts at 12:25 p.m.

The Retrievers came out strong and seized the day, defeating the Hartford Hawks 82-65 in front of a sold-out RAC crowd of alumni, students and fans. With the big win, the UMBC men's team is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in their 22 years in NCAA Division I.

Retriever players Jay Greene, Ray Barbosa and Daryl Proctor were named to the America East Conference’s All-Tournament Team. Greene was named the tournament’s most outstanding player for his continued excellence at the point guard position.

Students and alumni soaked up the history-making win, storming the confetti-strewn court and celebrating alongside players.

Marc Lay ’97 said, “I’m unbelievably proud of these guys. They put a great game together today.”

“I’m so proud of my school and just so happy to be a part of this,” said Larry Stauffer ’70.

The ticket to the “Big Dance” capped an exciting weekend for UMBC athletics, after a thrilling, triple-overtime win by men’s lacrosse against 6th-ranked Maryland late Friday night.
