This June, the Citizens' Theatre is proud to present its very first mini festival celebrating the best in homegrown and international work for children and young people. Encompassing four specially selected shows from the BANK OF SCOTLAND IMAGINATE FESTIVAL as well as the Citizens' own production LIAR, the festival is set to become a regular feature in the Glasgow venue's programme, attracting families and children of all ages.
Kicking off proceedings in the Circle Studio is LIAR, a co-production between TAG and Sounds of Progress. From a commissioned script by Davey Anderson, LIAR is a tale of mystery and everyday adventure, which jumps into the scary depths of friendship, betrayal, fear, curiosity and the terrifying talent we all have for making things up. Recommended for 8-12 years.
Two very special international productions from Europe include Compagnia Rodisio's THE WOLF AND THE GOAT (Italy) - the tale of an unlikely moonlit meeting between sworn enemies- and NEXT DOOR from Denmark's Theatre Fair Play- a chamber opera with a difference, featuring two neighbours in the shape of an elderly spinster and an ageing seaman who struggle to live next to each other. Recommended for ages 6+ and 8+, respectively.
Nobody is ever too old (or too young) for a lesson in morals, and England's Scamp Theatre's production of AESOP'S FABLES still finds currency today. Reworked by the former Children's Laureate, Michael Morpurgo, the production will feature three actors, a one man band and some very colourful characters retelling some of the most famous stories ever written, including ‘The Hare and the Tortoise', ‘The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg' and ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf'. Recommended for 5+.
From Scotland's Puppet State Theatre Company we will have THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES, a multi-sensory adaptation of Jean Gione's much loved story of one man and his dog who set out to transform a barren wasteland into a thing of great beauty. Awarded the Eco Trust's prize for Creativity in 2007 this show is recommended for children aged 7+.
And finally for tiny toddlers, Scotland's very own Andy Manley in association with Starcatchers presents MY HOUSE. The tale of a house where nothing is quite as it seems. A show that is tailor-made for tiny eyes, ears and minds from ages 2-3 years.
Of the forthcoming event, Imaginate's Chief Executive Tony Reekie said,
"The newly named Bank of Scotland Imaginate Festival has been a regular visitor to Glasgow over the last few years but this is the first time we've been part of a mini festival in this way. I'm delighted that so many of our productions will tour to the Citizens' this year. There's a wonderful range and quality of work both from home and abroad for young audiences and it's great to know that more children and young people in Glasgow will get an opportunity to see them." -- www.citz.co.uk
