Black Grace is an all male dance company boasting New Zealand's finest and most respected contemporary dancers. This innovative company of dancers is renowned for its unique ability to combine traditional and contemporary dance forms.
Black Grace debuted in Auckland in a record-breaking season that sold out prior to opening. In 1996, the company toured to Sydney, Australia, and that tour confirmed the company's mass appeal as the work elicited an overwhelming audience response. In 1997, Black Grace again performed in Sydney to capacity houses. In March 1999, Black Grace presented "New Works" in Auckland to sell-out success and becoming one of the longest contemporary dance seasons ever performed in New Zealand. The company has performed with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and presented its latest "New Works" season to capacity houses in Auckland and, due to overwhelming public demand, led to an extended season.
In 2005, Black Grace toured the United States, performing at the Dance Festival at New York's City Center and, in an extended engagement, at The New Victory Theater on 42nd Street. The company also appeared at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts, and throughout Hawaii. The tour was a resounding success, with enthusiastic audiences and sold out houses.
Based in Auckland, New Zealand, this young company has developed a cross-over audience from the Pacific Island, Maori and European communities in New Zealand. Their tours of Australia, the United States, and New Caledonia have demonstrated that the company's appeal can cross international boundaries.
