A group of business and political leaders is forming a legal defense fund called Detroit Justice Fund to help Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick fight felony perjury charges.

Members of the Detroit Justice Fund include Conrad Mallett, former chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court; S. Martin Taylor, a former DTE executive and a University of Michigan regent; attorney Reginald Turner, a member of the state Board of Education; and Detroit native and television personality Judge Greg Mathis.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty turned themselves in for booking yesterday after being charged with 12 felonies. They are scheduled for arraignment at 1 p.m. today [Mar. 25] on charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and conspiracy.
