Malthouse full of praise for hearty Lions defence

Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse says Brisbane's defence was the decisive factor in the Magpies' two-point loss to the Lions at the Gabba on Friday evening.

Jed Adcock delivered a stunning late goal to edge the Lions in front, with the hosts hanging on for a thrilling 13.18 (96) to 13.16 (94) victory.

Malthouse says Brisbane deserves more credit for its competitive mindset.

"I think their back line is probably underrated in many respects," he said.

"You can name a couple of players, but then when you look at the other blokes they can all play tall or medium. I think they had us covered."

Brisbane's first win of the 2008 AFL season impressed coach Leigh Matthews, paying tribute to the way his players finished the match.

"They found a lot in the last 20 minutes so that was good," he said

"[It was] a good game of footy a good, exciting game in difficult conditions. It's nice for us to have our nose in front."
