Politicians 'ignoring support for euthanasia'

Posted April 1st, 2008 by seher

The wife of the first man to use Northern Territory euthanasia legislation says some politicians are not even bothering to read a new bill that could see it reinstated.

Judy Dent has provided her submission to the federal Senate inquiry into a bill to repeal the euthanasia laws.

Her husband Bob Dent was a prostate cancer patient and used the legislation to end his own life in 1996, before the law was overturned by the federal government.

Ms Dent says she does not hold much hope for the bill despite submissions to the inquiry being overwhelmingly positive so far.

"Each politician I have spoken to has decided already without even reading the bill, in fact for some of them they're totally against the whole idea," she said.

She says politicians are ignoring the groundswell of community support in favour of legalising euthanasia.

"I saw how much comfort and peace of mind that it gave my terminally ill husband and even if I personally didn't want such a law I would not deprive those who did want it," she said.

Submissions to the inquiry close on April 9.
