An Australian health insurance provider New South Wales Health has rejected reports that its new care coordination centres for people suffering chronic diseases will segregate hospital patients based on whether they have private health insurance.

The health insurance plan intends to reduce the number of patients in hospital ward beds by placing them in separate Medical Assessment Units.

The Health Department will unveil details next week but the plan reportedly requires uninsured patients to undergo telephone coaching before accessing health services.

NSW Health spokesman Professor Ron Penny says everybody will be able to access the same services under the plan.

"Whether you're in private insurance or not, everyone has access to the public health system," he said.
