Earlier this month Broncos star wide receiver Brandon Marshell asked for a new contract. Upon meeting with Broncos owner Pat Bolwen late last week, Brandon left the facility with packed boxes in hand.

Marshell was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 4th round of the 2006 NFL draft. Players selected in this area of the draft receive very modest contracts by NFL standards.

While Brandon did not receive a big contract, he has produced in a big way in 2007 and 2008. In that time Marshell averaged 103 catches for 1295 yards and 6 plus touchdowns a year. He also maid the Pro Bowl in that time as well.

Because of this high performance and low pay it is understandable that Marshell would want a new contract. As it stands right now he is inline to make just over two million dollars this season. A wide out would make more like six million dollars, in the open market with his resume.

Will Brandon be traded from the team?

So far the reports out of Denver are that the Broncos have no intentions of trading Marshell. They claim that they do not intend on dealing with this situation the same way the dealt with Jay Cutler (traded in March to the Bears).

I believe the Broncos will try to keep Marshell, as you don't get your hands on a talent like this very often. How ever that very same thinking applied to the Cutler situation and eventually Denver traded him.

In the end if Marshell forces the issue as Jay did earlier this year, then look for Pat Bowlen to deal Marshell away. The Broncos are clearly in a transition period and it looks as if Bowlen does not want any "distractions" on the team.
