This will be the second start for Maroney as he started last week against the Tennessee Titans.
In that game he rushed for 123 yards on 16 carries and added a touchdown. This was the first relevant sign of positive production we have seen from Maroney in a long time.
Maroney's Struggles
Part of the reason Maroney has under performed in his career is because of a nasty shoulder injury that has troubled him for years. This very injury cost him most of last season as he was placed on injured reserve.
Another reason for Maroney's lack of production is that his team likes to use multiple running backs.
With more running backs brings less carries for any individual. Since runners tend to need around 20 touches a week to be highly effective, Maroney was set up to fail.
Now, Maroney will have fewer runners to contend with and has an opportunity to be the Patriots top back for the rest of the season.
If Maroney can excel once again this week I expect him to be the starter for awhile.
