Organisers of the Olympic torch relay in Canberra say they are braced for protests from pro-Tibet activists when the torch travels through the city on April 24.
The London leg of the torch relay descended into chaos overnight as pro-Tibet protesters jostled with police and security guards along the 50-kilometre route.
Thirty-five people were arrested and at one point demonstrators tried to douse the flame with a fire extinguisher.
The incident was the latest in a series of embarrassments for the Chinese Government, which is seeing its human rights record come under increasing scrutiny in the run-up to the Games.
Canberra relay taskforce chairman Ted Quinlan says organisers have been working with police to plan security for the Australian leg of the torch relay.
"We have a cohort of members of the AFP who are very experienced with protests," he said.
"We've involved people who have direct experience in torch relays [and] experience with APEC security.
"So we're very confident that we've got the capacity here to manage the situation."
