The pure tones and classic beauty of the horn are featured in a number of pieces Baroque, Romantic and Modern. The complete program includes the following pieces:
* J. B. Loeillet: Two Pieces (arr. Kuyper)
* Saint-Saens: Romance, op. 36
* Corelli: Sonata in F (arr. Magnini)
* Randall Faust: Harmonielehre for Solo Horn (1996)
* M. Marais: Le Basque
The Two Pieces by Loeillet provides a journey into the Baroque, in an arrangement commonly performed on the French Horn. Saint-Saens' Romance is a melodic and accessible piece, capturing the rich tone of the horn. The Sonata in F by Corelli is a Baroque work distinguished by a beautiful flow of melody and a mannerly treatment in the accompaniment. Randall Faust's Harnonielehre for Solo Horn is a very new work that exploits the study of horn harmonics as practiced by Dr. Douglas Campbell and the composer. It was first performed at Interlochen Center for the Arts in the Summer of 1996. Finally, the Marias Le Basque is the famous one minute encore piece used by horn virtuoso Dennis Brain, who called it "a little French dance which also happens to be the shortest piece I know".
The Afternoon Delights series (formerly known as Matinée Musicale) is a calendar of classical music concerts offered through the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra and the Jewish Community Center of Washtenaw County. These non-denominational concerts are supported by the J.F. Ervin Foundation, Rosebud Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs.
