Australian Young people 'feel too uninformed to vote'

A new study has found many teenagers do not enrol to vote because they feel they do not know enough about politics.

The four-year Youth Electoral Study from the Australian Research Council also found that many teens do not consider enrolling to vote a major priority when they turn 18.

Australian National University researcher Lawrence Saha says Australian teens are among the world's most politically aware.

But he says increased civics education in high schools is needed.

"School elections can be a very important learning experience, and we find a lot of variation in schools about school elections," he said.

"We find some are taken very seriously and students take them very seriously, and at other schools they don't, so we're just looking at that to see if there's something there that could be worked on."
