For the first time in its 10-year history Welsh National Youth Opera is holding auditions to recruit a number of dynamic and talented young instrumentalists aged 16-25. The band will perform alongside WNYO company members in the World Premiere of The Calling of Maisy Day, in the Weston Studio at Wales Millennium Centre in July 2008.
The Calling of Maisy Day, described as Dracula meets The Office is set in a 21st Century call centre manned by Vampires. The production follows a week in the life of the call centre manager, Maisy, as she goes undercover to discover the secret to her successful workforce.
For the first year WNYO are opening their doors to the wealth of musical talent in Wales and are holding auditions for the band. Rather than simply being an accompanying orchestra the band will be central to the performance of the piece, appearing on stage throughout, driving the music like a "house" band in a late night TV chat show.
The chosen 18 will have the opportunity to work closely with Music Director Tim Rhys-Evans, and award winning composer Brian Irvine who feels passionate about the decision to audition the band this year, "It promises to be a real thrill and challenge performing a piece of musical theatre never seen before. The band will be as integral to the action on stage as the singers themselves."
The auditions will take place on 12th and 13th April at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff. In order to audition you must be Grade 8 standard, be Welsh or have a received a significant amount of your education in Wales. -- www.wno.org.uk
