The oceans, rivers and lakes that cover 70% of Earth have long been an inspiration for artists, musicians, and writers alike. This PSO Youth Concert conducted by Ankush Bahl will feature music by Strauss, Debussy, Grieg, Copland and more, including Debussy’s La Mer and The Moldau, by Smetana.
The program will also feature nature photography exhibitions by award-winning Vermont writer, photographer and educator Marjorie Ryerson and the PSO’s bassist Lynn Hannings. Ryerson is the author of the book “Water Music” and runs a nonprofit organization of the same name, dedicated to the protection and restoration of the earth’s waters through raising awareness and resources.
In addition to playing the contrabass for the PSO, Hannings is also a bow maker, and serves as the president of the International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative (IMPCI). The IMPCI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of the Pernambuco, an endangered Brazilian tree used in making violin bows for over 250 years. Hannings’ photographs at the event feature the Pernambuco trees.
Described as an “energetic” conductor who leads with “clear authority and enthusiasm” by the New York Times, Ankush Kumar Bahl is currently in his first season as the Music Director of the New Jersey Youth Symphony. With reviewers descriptions of Bahl as “energetic,” “passionate,” “sensitive,” and “impressive,” he is the perfect choice to conduct this special concert for students.
