South African Trevor Immelman Wins Masters

South African Trevor Immelman has won the Masters in Augusta, Georgia, the first major golf tournament of the year.

Immelman had led from the opening round on Thursday. He began the final round Sunday with a two-shot lead, and increased it to six shots as windy conditions created problems for the rest of the field. Even after finding the water on the back nine, Immelman finished at eight under par 280 for a three-shot victory.

World number one Tiger Woods battled to finish in second place at five under par 283. Americans Stewart Cink and Brendt Snedeker finished in a tie for third place at four under par 284.

The last South African to win the Masters was Gary Player, who was Immelman's boyhood idol, in 1978.
