Italian Prime Minister-elect Silvio Berlusconi is promising to use his big election victory to push through a series of reforms, and to develop plans to save Italy's struggling national airline.
Mr. Berlusconi spoke Tuesday, just hours after unofficial election results showed his center-right coalition winning 168 seats in the Senate - 10 more than needed for an absolute majority. The figures also showed his alliance winning slightly more than half the seats in the lower house.
The 71-year-old billionaire, preparing for his third term as prime minister, pledged his government will do everything possible to save Italy's bankrupt air carrier, Alitalia.
Mr. Berlusconi also promised to hold his first Cabinet meeting in Naples, where residents have for weeks been burning uncollected garbage clogging the streets. He pledged to operate from that city three days a week until the refuse is removed.
Mr. Berlusconi previously served as prime minister in 1994 and from 2001 until 2006.
The new government, expected to be in place by early next month, will be Italy's 62nd government in the past 63 years.
