Obama Pledges To Keep Sacred Trust With Army Veterans

At a town hall meeting with veterans and military families today, Senator Barack Obama vowed to keep the sacred trust with those who have served, a solemn commitment that has too often gone unmet in recent years.

Obama called on the VA to help wounded vets register to vote and urged a full accounting of our wounded, injured and medically evacuated troops when discussing the costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, Obama has worked to increase funding for screening and treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and passed legislation to give health care to families caring for wounded veterans.

“We honor their service to this ideal every time we fly the flag,” Senator Obama said. “But the true measure of our patriotism is not taken on Veterans Day or Memorial Day - the true measure is how we provide for those who serve, and for their families, after the guns fall silent and the cameras are turned off. And it is my strong belief that over the last few years, we have not always kept that sacred trust – we have not served our veterans as well as they have served us.”
