Pope Benedict XVI, currently in the US capital Washington, DC, has held a surprise meeting with a number of victims of sexual abuse by priests. After joint prayers, the pope listen to the victim's stories. It is believed to be the first time that a pope has met victims of sexual abuse by priests.
Pope Benedict has repeatedly referred to the sensitive issue during his US visit, which began on Wednesday. The Vatican hopes that his visit will draw a line under the scandal that has done great moral damage to the US Catholic Church. Earlier in the day, the Pope acknowledged the pain and damage caused by the sexual abuse of priests during an open-air mass in Washington.
