An abridged version of Professor Peter Coles’ ‘Cosmology: A Very Short Introduction’, has been selected to be one of 12 authoritative mini-books specially published by the national daily newspaper The Independent as part of its Science Made Easy series.

The series sets out to explain big ideas of science, from evolution and dinosaurs, to particle physics and global warming. In his book, described by New Scientist as ‘a pleasure to read’, Professor Coles’ introduces cosmology, explains what cosmologists do, takes the reader through the Big Bang Theory, and more speculative modern issues such as quantum cosmology, superstrings and dark matter.

The art of making science accessible and fun led to the creation of the University’s award-winning spin-out company ‘science made simple’ which is based in the School of Physics and Astronomy.

With the aim of promoting science to the public it delivers spectacular and entertaining shows such as Cartoon Science and Bubbles and Balloons in schools. It has also contributed to science television programmes on ITV, BBC and Channel 4, 19 children’s books and regular radio appearances. The company also provides consultancy to the Research Councils and training to scientists, and has broken new ground in offering career opportunities in science communication.

Professor Coles’ book will feature in The Independent on Saturday 19 April.
