The 2008 Sounds of Summer Series is as follows:

SOS 1 - The Obsessions of Johannes Brahms: Monday, June 16, 2008 | 7:00 PM

What lurked beneath Brahms's stoic exterior? His passions owed much to his wild-eyed mentor, Robert Schumann. These included the piano; the songs of Schubert and Mendelssohn; a desire to extend the great forms of the Classical tradition; and - in what remains a riddle not fully resolved to this day - the affections of Robert's wife, Clara. We will explore all of these facets (and more) in a program devoted to what was surely his greatest obsession of all: the intimate sharing of great music.

SOS 2 - Bassooner or Later: Monday, June 30, 2008 | 7:00 PM

"The Clown of the Orchestra" has a serious side, too, although not too serious. The lush, gorgeous sound of a quartet of bassoons will take you from French Baroque to Italian opera with a few humorous stops along the way. Acquaint yourself with one of the most underappreciated instruments of the orchestra and find out how versatile it can be. Philharmonic Executive Director (and bassoonist) David Schillhammer hosts this program - and we might get him to play his bassoon, too!

SOS 3 - Tour of Duty: The Sovereign Brass Joins Up! Monday, July 21, 2008 | 7:00 PM

Enlist in the Sounds of Summer Series now and march to the beat as Sovereign Brass plays the music that has accompanied the U.S. military and united our country from the Revolutionary war to Desert Storm. Hear the songs that rallied the troops and soothed the lonely hearts at home while our troops were serving their "Tour of Duty."

SOS 4 - Tamas, Family & Friends: Monday, August 4, 2008 | 7:00 PM

Concertmaster Tamas Kocsis gets together with his fiance and his Mom to present a recital of chamber music. The program includes music from their native countries by Ravel, Debussy and Kodaly as well as works by Schumann and Haydn.

SOS 5 - Good Vibrations: Monday, August 18, 2008 | 7:00 PM

Our Philharmonic percussionists demonstrate that there is a lot more to percussion than what one may see in a full orchestral performance. Enjoy this exuberant program filled with works that represent a variety of musical styles, ranging from jazz and classical to minimalistic and contemporary. Included on the program are Bartok’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, Anthony Korf’s Blue Rhythm Quintet and Steve Reich’s Music for Pieces of Wood. -- www.orlandophil.org
