Jimmy Carter tells the Israeli Council on Foreign Relations that Hamas leaders have told him that they would accept a peace deal with Israel negotiated with Palestinian authority. Also Hamas lets Shalit, the captured Israeli soldier in Hamas custody, to send another letter home, saying that he is in good health.

Former US President Jimmy Carter told a special session of the Israeli Council on Foreign Relations that Hamas has agreed to allow captured IDF soldier Gilad Shalit to send another letter to his parents and that Shalit is said to be in good health.

Members of the council held a meeting Monday morning with the former American president in Jerusalem at the King David Hotel.

Carter said Hamas leaders told him that they would accept a peace agreement negotiated by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. He told the gathering that this means Hamas wll not undermine Abbas' efforts to negotiate an agreement with Israel and that Hamas will accept an agreement if the Palestinians support it in a free vote.
