The first large-scale survey of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) begins today in the Netherlands. Approximately 300,000 people between the ages of 16 and 29 will receive an invitation to be tested for chlamydia.

The survey will be carried out in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and south Limburg. The intended participants will received a written invitation, via the internet, to request a home test for the disease. Whoever is found to be infected will then receive a short course of antibiotics.

Although chlamydia is one of the most common STDs, many sufferers are never aware of an infection. In the long term, it can lead to infertility and ectopic pregnancies in women and to inflammation of the prostate in men.

The Dutch STD Aids organisation believes that young people will be more inclined to submit to testing if they receive an invitation via the internet and can produce a specimen themselves.
