Performing hits from their latest CD, The Town and the City, and more, Los Lobos make their way to Benaroya Hall for the first time on Wednesday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. Known as pioneers of the East Los Angeles rock scene, the band blends the eclectic styles of rock 'n' roll, R&B, Mexican, country, pop-rock, psychedelia and folk to create a signature sound that has entertained audiences for more than 30 years.
"It's Los Lobos confronting who we are today, in the only way they're capable, and with new sounds, fresh rhythms and a brooding manner that's sure to get under your skin" (Austin Chronicle). Formed in Los Angeles in 1973, the band originally performed under the name Los Lobos del Este. The mid-70s saw the band focus on traditional Mexican music and, in 1975, they recorded their first songs as part of a benefit album for César Chávez's United Farm Workers Union. Since the 1980s, Los Lobos have recorded regularly and toured across the country, earning the rare critical praise: "Nearly three decades in, Los Lobos have yet to make a bad record" (Chicago Reader). Los Lobos has toured with or opened for Bob Dylan, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews, ZZ Top, the Eagles, Santana, Lou Reed, U2, Johnny Lydon's PiL and the Grateful Dead.
Los Lobos have recorded several albums over the years, including Just Another Band from East L.A. (1978, re-released in 2000); How Will the Wolf Survive? (1984); By The Light of the Moon (1987); La Pistola y El Corazón (1988); The Neighborhood (1990); Kiko (1992); Colossal Head (1996); This Time (1999); Good Morning Aztlán (2002); The Ride (2003); and The Town and the City (2006), an epic album written completely in the first person that takes listeners through a journey of the human condition. The band received Grammy awards for the hit single "Anselma," and the albums La Pistola y El Corazón and Los Super Seven, the latter a joint effort between the members of Los Lobos and Flaco Jimenez, Freddy Fender, Rick Trevino, Joe Ely and Ruben Ramos.
