The 2007-2008 Season concludes this spring with Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio, sung in English. Two lovely young women are held hostage on the Orient Express and suffer greatly from the advances of their Turkish captors. A carefully planned rescue by their fiances goes awry, but the Pasha frees them in a surprising gesture of mercy.
This Mozart singspiel—a comic opera with spoken dialogue—features coloratura tours de force and ensemble singing that is positively thrilling. Soprano Mary Dunleavy, who was last heard at BLO as Pamina in Die Zauberflote in 2000, returns to sing the role of Konstanze. Boston favorite and local resident David Cushing, bass, performs Osmin following appearances with the Company in Un ballo in maschera, La traviata and others.
The other principals make their BLO debuts, including Tenor Norman Reinhardt as Konstanze's dashing fiance Belmonte; Coloratura soprano Amanda Pabyan, a recent New England Regional Winner and a National Semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions as the maidservant Blonde; and tenor Tim Oliver as the young lover Pedrillo, a role he has performed at the Dresden Saxonian State Opera in Germany where he is engaged currently as a soloist. Maestro Willie Anthony Waters, who made his Company debut conducting BLO's 30th Anniversary Celebration Concert in September of 2006, returns to conduct, and acclaimed Stage Director James Robinson reprises this popular re-imagined production set on the Orient Express.
