There is no cracking the American Idol code. Season 7 of American Idol is officially a crap shoot. It wouldn't be surprising if David Cook and David Archuleta found themselves in the bottom two next week. After a night when there were two clear bottom of the barrel performances on American Idol, two singers who gave good-to-great performances found themselves on stage with Ryan Seacrest at the end of the live broadcast. The enigmatic Idol voters have taken on an almost mythical quality. We all live and die at their inexplicable whim. Come to think about it, I don't know anyone who has ever voted for American Idol. Where are these 38 million votes coming from? What are the voters' agenda? Such are the mysteries of American Idol.
Tonight was the night that American Idol made the switch from naming a bottom three to a bottom two. The two big shocks of the night involved Jason Castro and Brooke White: neither were in the bottom two. Brooke forgot her words, then forgot how to sing, and must have gained the sympathy of a significant amount of voters. Jason Castro, I suppose, is pretty enough to sway the votes of a nation of tween girls.

Syesha Mercado
If this show was judged by the actual performances, Syesha wouldn't have come near the bottom two. She was spectacular last night, and she was just as good tonight when forced to give a premature goodbye performance. I hope she builds on her momentum next week.
Carly Smithson
Carly shouldn't have been eliminated tonight, but she was. Carly also gave a good performance last night, but not good enough. Her appeal was always difficult to pin down, and her elimination can be attributed to a less-than-rabid fan base. A shocking result, but Carly wasn't going to win anyway.
