The Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers thunder their way into North Devon on Thursday 1st May at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple.
Since the group was established in 1994, they have spearheaded the traditional Japanese art of Taiko drumming in Europe. The founder members even received intensive training in Japan with masters of the art form to perfect their powerful and precise technique.
Now Mugenkyo are also the proud owners of the UK’s first purpose built Taiko Centre, offering training programmes for future members, and providing workshops for those interested in trying their hand at bashing the big drums.
The concert is a dramatic, high energy, heart pounding spectacle performed on huge taiko drums interwoven with shinobue bamboo flutes. The drummers are spellbinding with their highly choreographed display of fluid grace, rhythm, athleticism and synchronicity.
The group performs over 100 concerts a year and have also enjoyed a number of high profile events including appearing at the BBC Last Night of the Proms. -- www.northdevontheatres.org.uk
