U.S experiences biggest outbreak of measles

The United States is engulfed in a massive outbreak of measles. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention registered about 64 cases of the measles infection this year.

The measles outbreaks were tracked down in nine states. The 64 victims had a wide age range: from 5 months to 71 years. Fourteen patients were hospitalized.

Measles is highly contagious—90% of people without immunity sharing a house with an infected person will catch it.

Thanks to vaccinations, measles virus was eliminated in the United States in 2000, but the risk of cases and outbreaks from imported disease or from non-vaccinated people (they are either too young to get shots, or just reject vaccination) remains high.

According to statistics, this year 85% of measles' cases was the result of “import.” The majority of imported cases was from Europe and Israel.
