Actors Theatre Presents Cruising The Divide

Actors Theatre of Louisville’s 2007– 08 Acting Apprentice Company will present its final showcase, Cruising the Divide: From West Broadway to Churchill Downs May 15 and 17 at 8 pm in the Bingham Theatre in the theatre’s downtown complex at Third and Main, and May 16 at 5:30 pm at Community in the Backyard located in the Braden Center at 3208 West Broadway.

Sponsored by E.ON U.S. and supported by generous grants from Carla Wallace, Emily S. Bingham and Stephen R. Reily, Cruising the Divide examines what is the heart of a community, the stories that define it and if theatre can bring those stories together.

Actors’ Apprentices partnered with community members from west Louisville and throughout the city to develop the play. By going out into the community and interviewing citizens about Derby Cruising and issues surrounding the event, they found passionate, varied and sometimes conflicting points of view. The project aims to bring together these diverse viewpoints to foster dialogue and to celebrate community.

This production is a continuation of last year’s community-based project Gathering Note, which focused on stories from Louisville’s Highview neighborhood.

As participants in the apprentice troupe, 22 young actors-in-training, plus theatre administrators, dramaturgs, stage managers and designers, become crucial members of the Actors Theatre team. Carefully chosen by competitive application or audition from all over the nation, they join the company for the entire ten-month season to gain in-depth professional experience and training in their fields.

Will MacAdams, Director of the Apprentice/Intern Company at Actors Theatre, crafted the script for Cruising the Divide from interviews conducted by the Apprentice Company and from other material the company gathered. The play will be directed by New York-based actor/director Tamilla Woodard. -- www.actorstheatre.org
