Directed by Kirk Jackson, who helmed last season's Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, the production brings together acclaimed actors Tyler Pierce (Fat Pig)and Holly Twyford, who is making her long-awaited return to The Studio Theatre. The Internationalist runs May 14 through June 22, 2008, in the Milton Theatre. Tickets are on sale now at The Studio Theatre, 14th and P Streets NW, 202-332-3300 or www.studiotheatre.org.
When Lowell, the central character in Anne Washburn's The Internationalist, sets off on an international business trip, he ends up with a bad case of cultural jet-lag. In an unnamed country where he does not speak the language, the normally confident Lowell struggles to find his footing. Are his colleagues impressed by him, or laughing at him? What are all those mysterious announcements on the office PA system? And the alluring new woman in his life--who is she really? Lowell isn't the only one operating outside his comfort zone--playwright Anne Washburn has invented a new language for The Internationalist, and the audience sees the world through his eyes. When Lowell doesn't understand the language, neither do we. With its film-noir style and jet-setting flair, The Internationalist is a cross-cultural comedy of errors for the global age.
Washburn is a founding member of 13P, one of the most intriguing new names on the New York theatre scene. In 2003, thirteen playwrights came together to create a company dedicated to full productions of new work; their motto is: "We don't develop plays. We do them." With names like Sarah Ruhl, Young Jean Lee, Sheila Callaghan and of course, Anne Washburn on their roster, the group gained national attention and received an Obie Grant. Ms. Washburn's other work includes Apparition (an off-Broadway hit in its production at the Connelly Theatre), The Ladies, I Have Loved Strangers, The Communist Dracula Pageant, and a translation of Euripides' Orestes. She is an associated artist with The Civilians, New Georges, and New Dramatists.
This production of The Internationalist is underwritten by an anonymous donor with additional support from Don & Nancy Bliss.
