Hu Jintao is in Tokyo on only the second ever state visit to Japan by a Chinese President.
Today he held summit talks with Japan's Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, that resulted in a joint statement from the two leaders outlining hopes for improved ties.
In recent years the relationship became frosty, due in large to disputes over Japan's attitude towards its actions in China in the lead up to and during World War II.
Both leaders say they want the relationship to be "forward looking" and stable ties will benefit the region and the world.
