Pensacola Symphony Presents Beethoven's Fifth

Join the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of music director Peter Rubardt, as it presents Beethoven's Fifth Saturday, January 13, at 8 p.m. at the Saenger Theatre. The orchestra will perform music by Ludwig van Beethoven, and American composers Leonard Bernstein and Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

The Masterworks Matinee encore performance is on January 14, 2007 at 2:30 p.m.
Beethoven's music speaks with power and eloquence, and his Fifth Symphony stands as the most famous piece ever written. From its dark, ominous opening to its thrilling finale, it is an emotional "tour de force" that has never been surpassed. Bernstein's brilliance as conductor, teacher and composer dominated music in the late 20th century.

His score for the film On the Waterfront is as compelling in the concert hall as it is on the screen. To enhance the concert experience of this piece, the Pensacola Symphony is planning to show a five minute clip of the movie On the Waterfront (starring Marlon Brando) prior to the actual performance of Bernstein's piece.

Renowned violinist Corey Cerovsek will perform Korngold's Violin Concerto, which shares themes with Korngold's Oscar winning film scores of the late 1930s. Cerovsek's graceful mastery of the violin, thoughtful interpretations and dramatic stage presence has earned him a loyal international following over the last 15 years. He appears regularly at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and Italy's Spoleto Festival. Cerovsek has been featured on NBC's Tonight Show, the David Frost Show in England, the PBS special Musical Encounters, and CBS's Sunday Morning.

Cerovsek began his violin studies at the age of five. He graduated at 12 years old from the University of Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music with a gold medal for the highest marks in strings. He received his bachelor's degrees in mathematics and music at age 15, masters in both at 16 and completed his doctoral course work in mathematics and music at age 18.
