On January 25, Arizona Opera presents Puccini's Madama Butterfly. At its La Scala premiere in 1904 Puccini introduced the tragic heroine Cio-Cio-San, the Butterfly caught in a web of devotion, faith and heartache. Since that debut Madama Butterfly has grown in the hearts of audiences to now be considered one of the world's most beloved operas.
Puccini's emotionally taut tragedy is set in 19th century Japan, a dynamic time of tradition and cultural change.
Puccini was inspired to adapt this love story after attending David Belasco's play "Madame Butterfly"Â in London. Reflecting the contemporary interest in the Orient, he combined exotic musical undertones with a mastery of realistic characterization to create a work of genius.
The stunning production was designed by Colin Graham and comes from Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Conducting is Antony Walker making his company debut.
Madama Butterfly is on stage in Phoenix January 25, 26, 27, 29 at 7:30 p.m. and January 28 at 2:00 p.m. at Symphony Hall (75 n. 2nd Street).
