On Saturday, April 26, they pooled their money and Debra purchased several Tax Free Million tickets from the Virginia Lottery and scratched them. One of them was a top-prize winner.
“We just won a million dollars!” she exclaimed to Ms. Olson.
She purchased the winning ticket of VA Lottery at Quik-E Foods, located at 1200 Lakeside Drive in Lynchburg. On April 30, 2008, Virginia Lottery officials went to the store to present the winners with their million-dollar prize, which they split evenly. The store also received a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Tax Free Million is a unique game from the Virginia Lottery, because the top prize of $1 million is the after-tax amount. Lottery officials add the required state and federal tax withholding to the prize, so a full $1 million remains. This is the first top-prize ticket to appear in the Tax Free Million game, which means two more million-dollar tickets are still out there.
Both Ms. Jefferson and Ms. Olson say they intend to use their winnings to become debt-free.
Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $3.4 billion for Virginia’s public schools, currently representing about 7 percent of annual state funding for public education in Virginia. In 19 years, the Lottery has awarded more than $10 billion in prizes to players and more than $1 billion in retailer commissions.
VA Lottery says please play responsibly.
