Breast Cancer Linked To Vitamin D Deficiency

Posted May 16th, 2008 by admin_huliq

A new study of breast cancer survival and Vitamin D by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, finds a link between a deficiency in Vitamin D at the time of diagnosis and the likelihood of their breast cancer metastasizing.

About 94 percent of the Vitamin D deficient patients will have their cancer metastasize, and 73 percent are more likely to die within 10 years.

Experts said that it is too soon to recommend taking Vitamin D supplements, more research needs to be done. Yet, in a separate study done by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, evidence shows that out of women who had adequate exposure to Vitamin D, 83 percent were still alive 10 years after their diagnosis.

Experts also "found that breast cancer incidence rose with increasing distance from the equator -- and thus with decreasing exposure to sunlight." Some of the highest incidents are found in places such as Iceland, New Zealand, Uruguay, France and the United States.

In June, the study will be presented at the American Society for Clinical Oncology's annual meeting in Chicago.

According to AFP Previous studies have shown a link between vitamin D and other types of cancer, notably prostate and colon cancer, as well as cardiovascular disease, Dr Goodwin noted.

The chief source for vitamin D is sun exposure, since the ultraviolet rays of the sun trigger vitamin D synthesis within the human body.

Dr. Eric Madrid has a good report on Breast Cancer and Vitamin D published in today's issue of eMaxHealth.
