Antonio Lopez Garcia (b. Tomelloso, La Mancha, Spain, 1936) has been singled out for his penetrating approach to his subjects as well as his exceptional skill, making him one of Spain’s most revered contemporary artists. As a world-recognized painter, draughtsman, and sculptor of the realist school, his masterful renderings of the prosaic, familiar places of his world and of the family and friends around him reveal an unusual sensitivity to nuance. His unrelenting examination and depiction of his subjects demand that the artist sometimes spends years finishing a single canvas.
The Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston has nine of Lopez’s most important early paintings, drawings, and reliefs in its collection. These will be included in the exhibition, the first retrospective at a U.S. museum of the artist’s works, with loans from European and American museums and private collections. Approximately 55 works of art—paintings, drawings, and sculpture—will be shown and will run concurrently with the MFA’s exhibition El Greco to Velazquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III (see below). A catalogue published by the MFA will accompany this exhibition.
