Obamas to Attend Evergreen Chapel at Camp David

President Barack Obama has announced, according to Time Magazine, that his family will be regularly attending the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David. However, there are also reports that the Obamas have not settled on a new church yet. Will they, or won't they be attending the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David?

The Evergreen Chapel at Camp David was dedicated in 1991, during George H.W. Bush's presidency. The chapel is primarily used by military personnel who are stationed at Camp David, along with their families.

According to Time, President Obama told White House aides that the Obamas would attend the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David. Aides had been attending churches in the area, scoping them out to find one for the first family to attend. Andy Barrack over at the Christian Post mentioned how the President had previously told ABC that he did not want to be responsible for the disruption his family's attendance would cause the church and its community.

That would not be a problem for the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David because of its secluded nature. The last time the President attended a community church near the White House, parishioners couldn't help but snap pictures of him on their camera phones, even as they were in the line for communion, according to Time magazine. Choosing the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David would certainly be a conscientious choice for the Obamas, especially since they seem to be a handle on what church attendance should be - a way to renew the spirit, not a publicity stunt. In my opinion, the choice to attend the Evergreen Chapel is the best one the Obamas can make.

This said, The Christian Science Monitor posted an article today saying that the Obamas have not chosen a church after all. The article includes this statement given by Deputy White House Press Secretary Jennifer Psaki: "The President and First Family continue to look for a church home. They have enjoyed worshipping at Camp David and several other congregations over the months, and will choose a church at the time that is best for their family.” So the question is, will they, or won't they, be attending the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David?

I'm sure we'll find out in the next day or two whether the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David is the church choice. In any event, the fact that this is one of the top stories in today's news is heartening, considering what it implies about the importance that the President and his family are putting on keeping a balanced life in the midst of the turmoil that has broken out over the globe during the past few weeks. Judging by the amount of current speculation that the Obamas will be attending the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David, I would say that their attendance there is a likelihood. Only time will tell, and the answer will be given by whether or not they actually do attend in coming weeks.
