Lantana Mob Scores In Hirsch Jacobs Stakes

Posted May 17th, 2008 by admin_huliq

Vinery Stables and Tom Ludt’s Lantana Mob had to tie the track record in order to win the $100,000 Hirsch Jacobs Stakes (G III) for 3-year-olds, a $100,000 race that starts a $1 million guaranteed pick four that ends with the Preakness.

Robby Albarado was aboard the son of Posse as he got up to win in the shadow of the wire to beat a very game Silver Edition by a neck in 1:09.1 for the six furlong distance over the fast main track. Speedy Force Freeze, who set the pace, had to settle for third. Lantana Mob now shares the Pimlico six-furlong record with Northern Wolf, who set the mark in 1990.

Lantana Mob paid $5.60. The bay colt, trained by Steve Asmussen, is now a four-time stakes winner, having annexed the Tyro and Sapling Stakes at Monmouth Park last year and the Bachelor Stakes at Oaklawn Park just last month.

Trainer and Jockey Quotes

Thomas Ludt (co-owner, Lantana Mob, winner) – “It was an impressive race. This horse ran on the eve of Breeders’ Cup, ran well and came back and ran a nice race at Oaklawn. He came back today and ran a very impressive race. Someone told me that he tied the track record today, that’s exciting.”

Robby Albarado (jockey, Lantana Mob, winner) – “They were going quick up front. We bided our time and let things unfold, just like (trainer) Steve Asmussen and I talked about. We didn’t get by until three jumps from the wire but I knew I had him. He showed he had a big punch.”

Edgar Prado (jockey, Silver Edition, 2nd) – “I can’t believe he got beat. I knew (Lantana Mob) was gaining on me, but when I took the lead I thought I was clear. My horse ran a good race, though.”

Clifton Berry (jockey, Force Freeze, 3rd) – “He ran good. That’s how we’ve been running, on the front end. He got out there quick. Every time this is the way he goes and we just didn’t want to change it up. He kind of inherited the lead.”
