Brooklyn Museum Offers Free Family Programs

With Events Ranging from Art-Making Classes to June’s Target First Saturday Arty Facts Saturdays and Sundays, participants meet in the Rubin Lobby promptly at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Children age four to seven and accompanying adult friends explore the galleries and create art in each ninety-minute class.

Arty Facts offers a different program each day. During the month of June, participants will explore how clothing can be used to present a person’s personality, life, and culture. After observing artworks related to the theme, What Are You Wearing?, participants will create a work to take home. Arty Facts is made possible by the Picower Foundation. Target First Saturdays

On Saturday, June 7, from 5 to 11 p.m., the Brooklyn Museum presents a free night of music, dance, and art-making classes that explores many cultures from Bali, India, Japan, Singapore, Ghana, and Africa. Family-friendly highlights include the music of the multicultural group Akoya Afrobeat from 6 to 8 p.m.; Gamelan Dharma Swara’s traditional Balinese music and dance at 6:30 p.m.; and a jewelry-making class using special materials from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Gallery/Studio Program Student Exhibition

Works by students in the Gallery/Studio Program’s spring semester will be on view in the Con Edison Education Gallery on the first floor from June 1 to August 3. Celebrate with spring-semester artists and their families in the Education Gallery on Sunday, June 1, from 3 to 5 p.m. The Gallery/Studio Program summer registration ends on June 30.

Through July 13, 2008. The most comprehensive retrospective to date of the work of internationally acclaimed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami includes more than ninety artworks that bridge fine art, design, animation, and fashion. Tickets for © MURAKAMI are $10 for adults, $8 for older adults and students with valid ID; children under 12 are free.

Utagawa: Masters of the Japanese Print, 1770–1900

Throgugh June 15, 2008.This exhibition presents 95 Japanese woodblock prints by more than 15 artists. The Utagawa School dominated the Japanese print market and created prints for a popular audience that documented famous places, landscapes, and kabuki actors.

Click! A Crowd-Curated Exhibition

June 27–August 10, 2008. Click! is a photography exhibition that invites Brooklyn Museum’s visitors, the online community, and the general public to participate in the exhibition process. The exhibition began with an open call for photography and an online forum where the public evaluated each digital image. -- www.brooklynmuseum.org
